Gibson les paul neck joint crack12/11/2022 ![]() ![]() If the crack is nothing to worry about, maybe I could get away with just a small finish repair? I paid 300CHF for it, they go for ~550CHF new here, with MIK Epis much more (600-800CHF) - so I am wondering if it's worth keeping and getting it fixed if needed. My bad.ĭoes this crack look bad? Should I be worried, or just view it as 'age' on a 20 year old guitar? I do genuinely think the seller didn't see it before the sale.Īs it still has it's original strings (20 years old and not tuned in years) they do drift out of tune slightly, but it seems pretty stable - I'd say 99% say that the joint doesn't flex from what I've seen. I suspect that it fell off a stand onto the tuner and it flexed the neck joint a bit too much. I tried to flex the neck and there is no movement, it doesn't 'open'. There is no 'flaking' or anything it's more of a 'seam'. It somehow doesn't look like a new crack - seems to be worn around the edges, not like a brittle new break. It doesn't go through up to the fretboard, with the finish there remaining untouched. It's pretty subtle, and there is a very very slight 'step' when I run my finger over it. I looked at the neck joint and on the high E side there is a finish crack down the joint, that goes around to the back of the guitar. I got home to examine it, and I noticed that one peg head wasn't quite straight - uh oh. ![]() The guitar even had it's original strings! The owner seemed genuine enough when they said that they played it at home form time to time a few years ago and it'd not been touched in about a year It has virtually *no* wear at all, frets are like new. The guitar came with the original Epi gig bag and original receipt The owner was very genuine (professional classical musician) It's a 2002 Epi DOT made in Korea and in perfect condition (not a ding, not a blemish on the front or back, with wonderful flamey grain - but see later) It played very very nicely and sounded fantastic through the amp I was using. ![]() I played it a bit, but as it was out of tune (hadn't been used in years and had genuinely 20 yer old strings), I gave it a quick once over, but that was it. I didn't really have a chance to check it over completely as I was in a rush to get back to work. I posted about buying a used Epiphone dot a few weeks ago - I finially picked up the guitar today, and it looks like I may have made a huge error. ![]()
